Why it fails

csv.DictReader reads every cell as a string. So row["amount"] is something like "42" (a str), not 42 (an int). When sum() starts adding values, the first 0 + "42" raises:

TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for +: 'int' and 'str'

Fix

Cast the value to int (or float, if the column has decimals) inside the generator expression:

total = sum(int(row["amount"]) for row in rows)

Safer version (handles blanks / whitespace)

If the CSV might have empty cells or stray spaces, guard it:

total = sum(int(row["amount"]) for row in rows if row["amount"].strip())

Bonus: parse it once, not per-row

If you have many rows, parse the column once when you read the file so you don't re-cast repeatedly:
